Extended Moray - Maras - Salineras Mountain Bike Ride
The day starts when our private vehicle (a comfortable sedan or a van) picks you up from your accommodation in Cusco or the Sacred Valley to bring you to the Salineras Ranch, located just outside the town of Urubamba, in the Pichingoto Community on the Urubamba River. Once everyone is ready we will equip you with a state of the art mountain bike and all the necessary safety gear.
Our bilingual guides are locals, extremely knowledgeable about the area. Our support team will prepare and serve you a delicious lunch; carry your gear; and assist you at every turn, from door-to-door.
We will start the ride by heading to the the archeological site of Moray: the agricultural experimentation and development center of the Inca. You’ll have an opportunity to visit the impressive architecture of Moray on foot.
We will then continue riding for another 45 minutes up to the quaint, colonial village of Maras. We will ride through the streets, where you can see one of the first Spanish churches, and the coats of arms from different Spanish colonial families carved into the stone doorways.
We will start the ride by going up an ancient, steep path for 30 minutes with a stunning view over 4000 salt ponds: the legendary Salineras salt mines.
Just outside of Maras village there is a spacious meadow, where our advance-team has set everything up for your picnic-style lunch break. We will take the time to admire the breathtaking views of the valley and snow-capped peaks.
Riding through Maras, we then begin an exciting descent past the famous Salineras de Maras, and you will get to enjoy a birds eye view of the sprawling salt mines, seeing the 4000 terraced salt ponds from a perspective most tourists do not have the opportunity to see.
We will leave our bikes again and explore the salt ponds on foot, learning from our local guide the fascinating history of this ancient complex.
Finally, get ready for some excitement as we descend a downhill track back to the ranch, where you will be able to use our showers and enjoy some refreshments to finish the adventure.
To avoid crowds, we start this ride early - at 8:30 am, so you can meet your guides and have your bike ready
Varies depending on the location of your hotel. If you are coming from Cusco, your driver will pick you up from your accommodation at 7:00 am, if you are already in the Sacred Valley pickup will be at 8:00 am.
