Salt Mines of Maras

Unearthing the Secrets of the Maras Salt Mines: A Journey Through Time and Geology

Nestled at the foothill of the Salineras Salt ponds, our ranch is a gateway to the captivating history of this remarkable site. While the Inca Empire revered these salt ponds as a central piece of their civilization, the question of the salt's origin is a geological marvel. Millions of years ago, an ocean covered vast expanses of central Peru. During the Andean orogeny, a mountain-building event dating back to the early Jurassic period, ocean waters were trapped inland. Through evaporation, halite deposits formed from hypersaline spring water, shaped by volcanic activity and earthquakes. Observing the Maras territory closely reveals distinct layers of salt and sediment, a testament to the region's dynamic geological past.

The Salineras salt ponds not only played a pivotal role in the Inca Empire but also held life-enriching properties. Although the origins of salt exploitation lack written records due to the absence of a formal language in the region, it is believed that the salt ponds have existed for at least 2000 years. Scientists posit that the extraction pools predate the Inca era, continuing as a precious resource for the civilization. In the absence of supermarkets or currency, the Incas utilized a barter system, and the sought-after salt drew people from across the empire for trade. Today, over 6,000 salt pans, each owned by a local Maras family, dot the landscape, with salt collected and sold in nearby towns. Curious visitors can delve into this fascinating history by joining us on a hike, led by our knowledgeable guide, offering insights into the ancient processes of salt harvesting. Come visit our ranch, where you can not only learn about this intriguing history but also procure the super healthy pink salt of Maras from our friendly neighbors .Here some properties of this unique salt.

  • Taste & Color: It has a subtle flavor with hints of minerality, unlike harsh sea salts. The beautiful pink hue comes from iron oxide and other trace minerals.

  • Mineral Richness: Packed with 84 bioavailable minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron, potentially offering health benefits beyond regular salt.

  • Origin & Sustainability: Hand-harvested from ancient Andean pools fed by glacial springs, making it naturally pure and free of impurities. The sustainable solar evaporation process minimizes environmental impact.

  • Health Claims: Potential benefits include regulating blood pressure, preventing muscle cramps, promoting nutrient absorption, and even having anti-inflammatory properties. Some claim it even improves mood and energy.

  • Culinary Delights: Ideal for finishing touches on gourmet dishes, enhancing flavors without overpowering them. It's also perfect for bath salts and other wellness applications.
